Reciprocating Pump mostly used on oily-water separator as discharge pump or hyper mist system as fire fighting pump on ships, so it’s important to know reciprocating pump troubleshooting.

Common reasons for too low capacity delviery include worn piston rings or packing, excessive internal running clearances, liquid-end valves leakage, too low working speed, an excessively high liquid-end differential pressure, air or foreign matter in the pump or suction line, insufficient submergence of the suction pipe, insufficient NPSHA, mechanical defect, a clogged suction strainer, a leaking relief valve and so on.
Reasons for excessive power consuming include rubbing contact and binding between the liquid and drive ends, a bent shaft or piston rod, improperly supported or misaligned piping, worn, overloaded, or improperly lubricated bearings or reduction gears, over tightened packing, mechanical defects, foreign matter in the cylinders, and operation under too high a liquid-end differential pressure.
